One safety innovation arose from a field worker’s suggestion at a district safety workshop on the jobsite of the Clackamas County Courthouse (shown).

PCL Construction Services

Some of the most impactful safety innovations at PCL come from those closest to the work — the craft professionals and field teams. A standout example began at the Clackamas County Courthouse project during a district safety workshop. A field worker suggested a program that not only encouraged hazard reporting but also recognized positive safety behaviors.

From that idea, the “Safety Sighting” initiative was born. Inspired by the Pacific Northwest’s Sasquatch legend, the program uses a fun mascot, stickers, and posters to keep safety visible and engaging. Workers can report hazards or near misses easily through QR codes or paper cards, and weekly recognition celebrates participation.

The results were immediate: more observations, stronger communication, and improved accountability across trades. What started as one suggestion became a lasting part of PCL’s safety culture — proving that listening to our people drives real change.
