University of Washington Interdisciplinary Engineering Building
Hensel Phelps
The University of Washington’s Interdisciplinary Engineering Building is a five-story, 76,000-square-foot facility designed through a progressive design-build approach. It provides flexible classrooms, labs, and student services for 10 engineering departments.
Client satisfaction was evident through direct feedback and the project’s on-time, on-budget delivery despite pandemic challenges and record cost escalation. The university praised the team’s transparency, responsiveness, and ability to turn site constraints, like a steep 60-foot slope, into over $700,000 in savings.
Extensive engagement with students, faculty, and leadership ensured the building met diverse needs. Cost-effective solutions, such as stacking labs vertically, preserved design quality while reducing expenses. Recognized as a model for future projects, UW IEB reflects innovation, collaboration, and a strong commitment to the university’s vision.
