Federal Way Link Extension

Kiewit

The Federal Way Link Extension expands Sound Transit’s light rail 7.8 miles south from Angle Lake to Federal Way, adding three elevated stations, three parking garages, and 2.5 miles of guideway. Valued at $1.7 billion, the project required coordination across four cities and over 350 permits. Sound Transit’s confidence in the team was built on leadership, transparency, and collaboration.

Kiewit Infrastructure West led a partnership-driven approach with formal partnering sessions, bi-weekly reviews, and proactive issue resolution. This trust enabled approval of 34 alternative concepts, saving $70 million while keeping the project on schedule and budget with zero lost-time incidents.

The extension opened Dec. 6, connecting South King County to SeaTac Airport, downtown Seattle, and the University of Washington, improving mobility and quality of life.
